May 2011

Our last full month in Oki. Lots of mixed emotions: sad and happy, depressed and excited, nervous and calm, bitter and joyful. I know it will be great being back in the states and to be able to see family more often will be nice. But I know we will miss this beautiful island and all of the fun adventures and exciting cultural experiences.

One of my favorite Okinawan things is Taiko drumming. When I heard Elijah's school was having a very popular after school club for it, I jumped at the opportunity. He did NOT want to do it at first. I told him to try it once, and if he absolutely hated it, he could let someone on the waiting list take his spot. But, just like I knew, he loved it!!
The club put on a very special performance in front of the school.

This kid is so talented!

I helped organize and raise funds for Noah's school's first cultural day. We decided to do Mexico/Cinco de Mayo. It was a hit!!

Teaching everyone how to do the Macarena...lol!!

I went on a girls day trip with Karen, Hyla, and Devin to the glass factory...finally! I blew some glass, but unfortunately left island before I could pick it up from the cooling process. Nonetheless, it was still a fun and cool day!

As Tim's time was nearing the end in Okinawa, he had a little bit more free time from work. This day he came with us to Elijah's school field trip to Ryukyu Mura-a small theme park about traditional Okinawan culture in the form of a recreated village from the times of the Ryukyu Kingdom.

It was "OK".  It was fun to be together, see what it was, and get it checked off my bucket list; but I wouldn't probably go back. Best thing was at the end when Elijah got a caricature picture drawn of himself and Tim bought a necklace for himself.

Seeing odd things in Oki never gets old. A pig face with sunglasses, really? LOL!!

Tim and I went to eat lunch at our favorite Thai restaurant. I finally talked him into taking these pictures!

Heart shaped carrot;-)

Noah and his best buddy, Gino, at swim practice.

Elijah was so proud of this plant he planted in school. His grew the biggest. We gave it to the Khorassani's when we left to take care of it.

Many, many visits to the dolphin park this last month. I don't think we'll ever find a better park!

Noah had a end of the year party for EWMS at Baba Park (Dolphin park!).

And, of course, one last hurrah at Monakids Jungle!!

Manzamo Point AKA The Toilet Bowl

I wanted to take a picture of this forever! A little Hollywood, a little NYC, and a lot of Oki:-)

Another cool something to take a picture of on our road trip.

Tim: "Are you sure this is the right way Amber? This path doesn't really look like a road. "
Me: "Tim, we're in Okinawa. Of course this is the road."
Duh? or Huh?

Yep! It led us to another beautiful piece of Okinawa: Manzamo Point: : a scenic cliff that offers spectacular views of the East China Sea.

There is also a famous diving site here called the Toilet Bowl.
And obviously some good fishing.

This is the famous Manzamo Point

Just absolutely beautiful!!

Of course we had to make one last trip to our northern getaway: Okuma Beach. We went with some of our besties: the Khorassani's.

So good to have such good friends whose kids get along so well with ours.
